Acne is a common and chronic skin condition that causes pimples or “zits”. Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. The plugged follicle grows larger and forms a pimple. Pimples often occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders.

Many factors can contribute to the development of acne, including hormonal changes during puberty, excess oil production, hair follicles clogged by dead skin cells and oil, bacteria, certain medications, and family history of acne. However, acne is not caused by dirt.

While dirt may be a contributing factor, it is not the primary cause of acne. Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. The plugged follicle grows larger and forms a pimple. Pimples often occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. In addition, while diet and stress may be contributing factors, these are not the primary causes of acne.

To help clear your acne in as little as three months, below is a science-based skincare routine that includes four steps: cleanse, tone, moisturize, and protect. First, cleanse your skin twice a day with a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. Choose a cleanser that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, as these ingredients will help to unclog pores and reduce inflammation. Be sure to avoid harsh soaps and scrubs, as they can strip the skin of its natural oils and aggravate acne.

Second, tone your skin with an alcohol-free toner. Toners help to remove excess oil and dead skin cells, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Choose a toner that contains glycolic acid or lactic acid, as these ingredients will help to exfoliate the skin and reduce acne.

Third, moisturize your skin with an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Moisturizers help to hydrate the skin and prevent it from becoming dry and irritated. Be sure to choose a moisturizer that is labeled “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic”, as these products will not clog pores or aggravate acne.

Finally, protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen every day. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage the skin and make acne worse. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and be sure to reapply it every two hours.
